The United Kingdom (UK) left the European Union (EU) on the 31st January 2020 (BREXIT).  If you are lucky to have an European Union (EU) passport obtaining residency is straight forward for you and any Non-EU family members.   

If you only hold a non-EU passport don't despair, there are other options.  The typical choices for UK Citizens / Passports holders are the Non Lucrative Visa (NLV), or Digital Nomad Visa (DNV).  The Golden Visa for real-estate investment is no longer available for residency since a change in the law in April 2025.

POPULAR SPANISH RESIDENCY AND VISA OPTIONS FOR UK CITIZENS FOLLOWING BREXIT

NON-LUCRATIVE VISA (NLV)

To live in Spain without working and without the need for a a large investment.

It is a long-term visa/residency that can be renewed twice (2 years at a time). After five years, it can be used to start the process of getting permanent residency in Spain.

To qualify applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient financial means such as savings, pensions or passive income such as rental income or dividends.  For 2026, the minimum financial requirement per year is €28,800 (€2,400 per month) for the primary applicant and €7,200 per year (€600 per month) each for the partner and/or other dependents.

DIGITAL NOMAD VISA (DNV) 

working remotely 

To live in Spain and work remotely for a company based outside of the country
The initial visa/residency is granted for 1-3 years and can be renewed up to five years, after five years, it can be used to start the process of getting permanent residency in Spain.

To qualify, the applicant must have a degree or at least 3 years work experience and be able to work remotely.  The applicant needs to be employed or self employed (starting at least 3 months before you apply) working with a registered company outside of Spain that has existed for more than one year.  For 2026 the primary applicant requires an income of €2,849. For other family members, the first dependent €1,068 and the other dependents €356 each.

EU CITIZEN or FAMILY OF EU CITIZEN

To live and work in Spain (with or without work), if you or your partner/spouse have an EU passport, Non-EU family member(s) can apply for Spanish Residency.
The residency is granted for five years, after five years it can be used to start the process of permanent residency in Spain.

To qualify, if the EU citizen has a Spanish work contract then there is no financial minimum requirement, otherwise you need to demonstrate the financial means to support the primary applicant and partner/dependents as well complying with other requirements.
